Title: “Chinampas – Floating Gardens” - SOLD
16” x 20” Acrylic & India Ink on Canvas
Artist: Corina Gabaldón
Chinampas, sometimes called “floating gardens” or “aquaponics”, were fertile lands used to grow crops on the lakes surrounding the Valley of Mexico. Trees were planted at the corners of the gardens to provide support and stability.
This painting is part of a series from the story, La Concha de La Tortuga – A Creation Myth. It depicts the beginning of the story, called Emergence, where Mother Turtle comes out of the water, representing our leap from our origins onto this Earth. Mother Turtle spreads the cosmic seed which pollinates the Earth and begins to give life –flowers, plants vegetables and herbs.
In the painting are the Mayan glyphs for the “cosmic seed”, “maize”, “sacred corn”, and “the tule reed”, which grew in the wetlands and was used to weave grass mats. The deeper meaning of these symbols in the picture and within the story is the idea of cosmic expansion, harvest, cycles, events and the beginning of time. The ceiba trees symbolize strength, union, and the point of beginning where the world came into being. The arch over the turtle is symbolic of the movement of Earth and the universe. The serpents represent energy and life force.
Title: “Xochiquetzal – Goddess of Love
and Beauty” - SOLD
16” x 20” Acrylic & India Ink on Canvas
Artist: Corina Gabaldón
The day sign Xochitl, in Nahuatl, is protected by the Goddess of Love and Beauty known as Xochiquetzal, or as she is sometimes called, Lady of Precious Flower. She is the patroness of painters, weavers and embroiderers. She also resides over childbirth and pregnancy. Xochiquetzal was the first mother of twins.
Xochiquetzal symbolizes the temporary beauty of the flower, the temporariness of life in general. She is usually depicted holding or surrounded by flowers and accompanied by the jaguar, which represents feminine energy. The color pink is representative of her love, which radiates from the heart chakra. The flower is a symbol of beauty, art, creativity, and fertility, and the white is purity and spirituality.
A Nahuatl story tells us that Xochiquetzal was transformed into a butterfly, which provided her with the ability to influence others toward seeking beauty and positive thoughts.
Title: “Cozcacuauhtli – The Wise One”
16” x 20” Acrylic, Oil, & India Ink on Canvas
Artist: Corina Gabaldón
The day sign Cozcacuauhtli, in Nahuatl, is a day of introspection and forgiveness. It is a time to reflect on past acts and their consequences – to think about the law of cause and effect. It is a good time to make offerings, ask forgiveness from those who we’ve wronged, attend ceremonies and listen to elders and our cultural traditions. It is also a time to ask Mother Earth for forgiveness of past abuses and give thanks for the abundance she has provided. It is a special time to think about the “karma” we are now creating, and how we can make choices that bring balance, peace and harmony to ourselves and the world. During this time, great sages and the “wise ones” would share their knowledge. Not only can we learn from their teachings, but we can seek knowledge from within ourselves as well in order to tap into our life’s purpose and the path we are traveling at this time in our evolvement. In addition, it is an opportune time to appreciate the wonder and beauty of this mysterious universe and to remember that everything in the universe is connected – we are one.
Those born under Cozcacuauhtli, live long lives, and are strong and healthy. They are wise, calm and eloquent. They love to teach and are fond of giving good advice.
