Title: “Chinampas – Floating Gardens” - SOLD
16” x 20” Acrylic & India Ink on Canvas
Artist: Corina Gabaldón

Chinampas, sometimes called “floating gardens” or “aquaponics”, were fertile lands used to grow crops on the lakes surrounding the Valley of Mexico. Trees were planted at the corners of the gardens to provide support and stability.

This painting is part of a series from the story, La Concha de La Tortuga – A Creation Myth.  It depicts the beginning of the story, called Emergence, where Mother Turtle comes out of the water, representing our leap from our origins onto this Earth. Mother Turtle spreads the cosmic seed which pollinates the Earth and begins to give life –flowers, plants vegetables and herbs.

In the painting are the Mayan glyphs for the “cosmic seed”, “maize”, “sacred corn”, and “the tule reed”, which grew in the   wetlands and was used to weave grass mats. The deeper meaning of these symbols in the picture and within the story is the idea of cosmic expansion, harvest, cycles, events and the beginning of time. The ceiba trees symbolize strength, union, and the point of beginning where the world came into being. The arch over the turtle is symbolic of the movement of Earth and the universe. The serpents represent energy and life force.

Title: “Xochiquetzal – Goddess of Love
and Beauty” - SOLD
16” x 20” Acrylic & India Ink on Canvas
Artist: Corina Gabaldón

The day sign Xochitl, in Nahuatl, is protected by the Goddess of Love and Beauty known as Xochiquetzal, or as she is sometimes called, Lady of Precious Flower. She is the patroness of painters, weavers and embroiderers. She also resides over childbirth and pregnancy. Xochiquetzal was the first mother of twins.

Xochiquetzal symbolizes the temporary beauty of the flower, the temporariness of life in general. She is usually depicted holding or surrounded by flowers and accompanied by the jaguar, which represents feminine energy.  The color pink is representative of her love, which radiates from the heart chakra. The flower is a symbol of beauty, art, creativity, and fertility, and the white is purity and spirituality.

A Nahuatl story tells us that Xochiquetzal was transformed into a butterfly, which provided her with the ability to influence others toward seeking beauty and positive thoughts.

Title: “Cozcacuauhtli – The Wise One
16” x 20” Acrylic, Oil, & India Ink on Canvas
Artist: Corina Gabaldón

The day sign Cozcacuauhtli, in Nahuatl, is a day of introspection and forgiveness. It is a time to reflect on past acts and their consequences – to think about the law of cause and effect. It is a good time to make offerings, ask forgiveness from those who we’ve wronged, attend ceremonies and listen to elders and our cultural traditions. It is also a time to ask Mother Earth for forgiveness of past abuses and give thanks for the abundance she has provided. It is a special time to think about the “karma” we are now creating, and how we can make choices that bring balance, peace and harmony to ourselves and the world. During this time, great sages and the “wise ones” would share their knowledge. Not only can we learn from their teachings, but we can seek knowledge from within ourselves as well in order to tap into our life’s purpose and the path we are traveling at this time in our evolvement. In addition, it is an opportune time to appreciate the wonder and beauty of this mysterious universe and to remember that everything in the universe is connected – we are one.

Those born under Cozcacuauhtli, live long lives, and are strong and healthy. They are wise, calm and eloquent. They love to teach and are fond of giving good advice.

Madre Mestiza - Transcendental Goddess
12x18 print -

This painting is in honor of La Virgen de Guadalupe, the ancestral mother of all Mexican people, the first Mestiza, who has guided, protected and healed us toward our own personal as well as collective growth. Her outward appearance transformed from Tonantzín, the Aztec “Goddess of Sustenance”, “Mother of Corn” and “Bringer of Maize” to “La Guadalupana,” Protector, Healer and Guide, who continues to nourish our individual and collective souls. In this work, “Madre Mestiza – Transcendental Goddess” is a symbol of our evolutionary heritage, preparing us for the Fifth Sun and the new dawn of humanity. “Madre Mestiza” provides the sustenance we need during this time of soul expansion and great evolutionary leap. Her support, life energy, personal power, unconditional love and compassion, intuitiveness and illuminating spirit will assist us in our transmutation, transformation, and transcendence toward a higher state of being, which can only take place when we embrace the divine feminine, and open our hearts, souls and minds. Our collective energies have wished for a new enlightened humanity, a time referred to as the “Great Remembering” – and this journey toward our full potential and well-being will be nurtured through the life-giving force that is “La Virgen”. Espíritu Inmortal (Immortal Spirit)
10x13 1/2 - Print

This work celebrates the "immortal spirit," the everlasting life energy within all of us. Although our bodies die, our essence goes on. Espíritu Inmortal (Immortal Spirit) depicts Death as belonging to the Earth, the Sun as representing the "life force" that does not die but only transforms, and the Guardian Angel who was with us at birth and now guides our spirit/soul on its evolutionary journey. It was inspired by Dia de Los Muertos celebration and the ancient Zapotec/Mixtec codices. (See below for additional purchasing options.)

Ancient Wisdom
8x10 Print -

This image was born out of my collaborative work with artist friends Denise Chávez, Nancy Green, Ricardo Valencia, Kris Wroblewski and Daniel Zolinsky. Denise and I wrote a story, La Concha de la Tortuga at a workshop facilitated by musician/writer Nancy Green. Nancy was impressed by the story and wrote a grant to record the story and include a musical background. This inspired me to create a series of paintings for a children’s book. As I was preparing to paint Ancient Wisdom, first of a series of paintings, my daughter went into labor and gave birth to her first child, Kaisa Dulcinea Penney. Witnessing Kaisa’s incredible dance from the Music of the Spheres onto this Earth left me with a deeper appreciation of life and my journey with those who have all been a part of my soul’s development. Ancient Wisdom symbolizes the journey we all take from the waters to the land and into the heavens. It serves as a reminder of the beauty and sacredness of motherhood as well as the birth and nurturing of all things, whether they are physical or in spirit/mind – to hold them with compassion, respect for their being, and allow them to grow in their own way and follow their own path as Mother Turtle knows. Her wisdom has been on this Earth since the beginning of time. Ancient Wisdom was included as the CD cover of La Concha de la Tortuga: A Creation Myth.
